Windows Update Explained: Why It Matters and How to Manage It

Last updated November 6, 2026 · By the PC Guide Info editorial team

Windows Update delivers security patches, bug fixes and new features. Keeping it current is one of the most effective ways to protect your PC.

Why updates matter

Attackers often target known weaknesses in software. Updates close those gaps. Delaying them for months leaves your computer exposed to problems that have already been fixed.

How to check for updates

Open Settings, then Windows Update, then select Check for updates. Install what is offered and restart when prompted.

Active hours

You can set active hours so Windows does not restart while you are working. This setting is in Windows Update, under Advanced options.

Update drivers and apps

  • Graphics, network and chipset drivers are available from the manufacturer or through Windows Update.
  • Update your browser and other everyday programs. Many do this automatically.

If an update fails

  1. Restart the computer and try again.
  2. Make sure you have enough free disk space.
  3. Disconnect unnecessary USB devices.
  4. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter from Settings, then System, then Troubleshoot, then Other troubleshooters.
  5. If the problem persists, note the error code and search for it on Microsoft's support site.

Before a major update

  • Back up important files.
  • Plug in a laptop charger.
  • Make sure you have a stable internet connection.

Old, unsupported versions

When Microsoft stops supporting a Windows version, it no longer provides security updates. If your computer runs an unsupported version, plan to upgrade or replace it.
