Laptop Battery Care: How to Make It Last Longer

Last updated November 6, 2026 · By the PC Guide Info editorial team

Laptop batteries are consumable parts, but how you use them affects how long they stay healthy. These habits make a real difference.

Avoid extreme heat

Heat is the biggest enemy of lithium-ion batteries. Do not leave your laptop in a hot car, and do not block its vents by using it on a bed or sofa. A hard, flat surface or a laptop stand allows better airflow.

Avoid extreme charge levels

Keeping a battery at 100 percent for long periods, or letting it fall to 0 percent regularly, increases wear. Many laptops now include a battery care setting in the manufacturer app or BIOS that limits charging to around 80 percent. This is useful if the laptop is mostly plugged in.

Reduce power use

  • Lower the screen brightness, since the display is one of the biggest consumers of power.
  • Use the built-in battery saver mode when you are away from a charger.
  • Close programs you are not using and disconnect unused USB devices.

Use the right charger

Use the charger that came with the laptop or a reputable certified replacement with the correct power rating. Cheap, uncertified chargers can damage the battery and are a safety risk.

Check battery health

Windows can generate a battery report. Open Command Prompt and type powercfg /batteryreport to create an HTML report showing design capacity and current capacity.

When to replace it

If the laptop shuts down suddenly, the battery lasts only a short time, or the case looks swollen, stop using it and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair service. A swollen battery is a safety hazard.
