How to Choose a Laptop: A Practical Buying Guide
Choosing a laptop is easier when you start with how you will use it rather than with a list of specifications. A machine for writing and browsing has very different needs from one for video editing or gaming.
Start with your main use
- Everyday use (email, web, documents, video calls): a modern mid-range processor, 8 GB of memory (16 GB is more comfortable) and a solid state drive are plenty.
- Study and office work: prioritise battery life, a good keyboard and a screen that is comfortable to read.
- Creative work and gaming: look for 16 GB or more of memory, a dedicated graphics card and good cooling.
The parts that matter most
Processor. Compare processors from the same generation and product tier rather than just clock speed. Newer generations are usually more efficient, which also helps battery life. Memory (RAM). 8 GB is a sensible minimum today. If the memory is soldered to the board, you cannot upgrade it later, so buy a little more than you think you need. Storage. Choose a solid state drive (SSD). Aim for at least 256 GB, and 512 GB if you keep many files locally. Screen. A full HD (1920 x 1080) display is a good baseline. Check brightness, because dim screens are tiring outdoors and near windows. Matte finishes reduce glare. Battery and weight. Manufacturer battery claims are usually best-case. Read independent reviews that test real-world use, and check the weight if you carry the laptop daily.Often overlooked details
- Keyboard feel and trackpad quality, because you touch them all day.
- Ports: USB-C, USB-A, HDMI and a headphone jack save you from carrying adapters.
- Warranty length, and whether the manufacturer offers repairs in your country.
- Whether the battery and storage can be replaced.
A simple checklist
Write down your budget, your must-have features and your deal-breakers. Compare two or three models against that list and read several independent reviews before you buy.
