How to Clean Your PC and Peripherals Safely

Last updated November 6, 2026 · By the PC Guide Info editorial team

Regular cleaning helps your computer run cooler, last longer and stay pleasant to use. Dust is a particular problem because it traps heat.

Before you start

  • Shut down the computer and unplug it from the power outlet.
  • For laptops, disconnect the charger. Remove the battery only if the manual says it is designed for that.
  • Work in a well-lit, dry area and avoid carpets, which can build up static electricity.

Cleaning the inside of a desktop

  1. Open the side panel according to the manual.
  2. Use short bursts of compressed air to blow dust from fans, filters and heatsinks. Hold the fan blades still with a soft tool so they do not over-spin.
  3. Clean dust filters with water if they are washable, and let them dry completely.
  4. Avoid using a household vacuum cleaner inside the case because it can create static electricity.

Cleaning a laptop

Use compressed air in short bursts at the vents. Do not open the laptop unless you are comfortable doing so, because that may affect your warranty.

Screens

Turn the screen off, then wipe it gently with a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth slightly dampened with water. Never spray liquid directly onto the display, and avoid harsh chemical cleaners.

Keyboard and mouse

  • Turn the keyboard upside down and gently tap it to remove crumbs.
  • Wipe keys with a cloth lightly moistened with isopropyl alcohol, avoiding excess liquid.
  • Clean the mouse feet and sensor window with a dry cotton swab.

How often?

Check dust levels every three to six months. Pets, carpets and smoking increase how quickly dust builds up.
